Part 1: The Criteria Sort
Part 2: The Values Sort

The Card Sort Activities

Your Ambassador box includes two complete decks. Each deck has two distinct sorting activities: the criteria sort (black and white cards) and the values sort (black and colorful cards).

Have the student make a Forget the Rankings account using the sign-up instructions above, then:

  1. Consider using the college counseling note-taking form from the counselor resource library to document insights during the process

  2. Separate both decks into four piles: two piles of criteria cards and two piles of values cards

  3. Begin with the criteria sort: give one pile to the student and one to the parent/guardian

  4. Have them sort independently, then have the student share their top choices first, followed by the parent/guardian. This creates natural opportunities for meaningful dialogue centered around the student's voice

  5. Repeat the same process with the values sort piles

  6. Have the student scan the QR codes on their top value cards to access curated college lists that align with those values

  7. Students can also access the college values lists through the members section of the website

The FTR Web Platform

Our web platform takes the card-sorting experience even further! Students can explore College Profiles to revisit their criteria preferences and see their values in action. From there, they can dive into our robust Members section featuring a values-based search engine and scholarship search.

While we're proud of our 370+ college database, we know students might want to explore other schools too. That's why we've created targeted questions to help them evaluate if any college truly aligns with their values.

Counselors, you'll find virtual card decks and additional resources in your dedicated section to enhance your work with students.

And if your students aren't sure what they value yet, our reflection curriculum will help them figure it out.

Below, you'll find specific ways you can support and promote Forget the Rankings as an Ambassador.

We'd love for you to share your experience using these tools with other counselors - your voice can help us reach more students who could benefit from this reimagined approach to college searching.
