The College Rankings System Didn't Just Fail Us, It Failed to See Us

Most fundamentally, it failed to see that human potential cannot be ranked—that reducing complex, multifaceted individuals to numbers creates a false hierarchy that serves institutions more than students.
We've accepted this system for too long, internalizing its values until we began to see ourselves through its narrow lens. We learned to ask "Where do I stand?" instead of "Who am I becoming?" We prioritized the quantifiable over the meaningful, the prestigious over the purposeful.
But recognition is growing. More students, parents, and educators are questioning whether these rankings serve our true educational goals. They're asking why we've given so much power to metrics designed to sell magazines rather than nurture human development.
The time has come to reclaim education from the tyranny of rankings. To create systems that value students for their unique qualities, not just their measurable outputs. To build educational cultures where mental health isn't collateral damage in the pursuit of success.
This isn't about abandoning standards or excellence. It's about expanding our definition of what excellence means—recognizing that it takes infinite forms, follows countless paths, and cannot be captured in a single ordered list.
